The new Silex malware has struck and thousands of IoT devices were attacked, and rendered useless, within hours. ZDNET reports that attacks are still ongoing, and according to an interview with the malware’s creator, they are about to intensify in the coming days. According to Akamai researcher Larry Cashdollar, who first spotted the malware earlier today, Silex works by trashing an IoT device’s storage, dropping firewall rules, removing the network configuration, and then halting the device. “It’s using known default credentials for IoT devices to log in and kill the system,” Cashdollar told ZDNet in an email. “It’s doing this by writing random…

Technology has changed – and is still changing – many industries, but none more so than financial services. From the introduction of ATMs to internet banking via apps, to today’s seemingly new online-only digital banks, technology is transforming the business models of banks. The new digital banks are trying to make inroads into the market share of the incumbents by offering agile, digitalised alternatives, says Richard Firth, CEO of MIP Holdings, who adds that the trend for automation and digitisation is visible across the value chain, from customer contact and lending to mortgages, payments and alternative financing. “We are seeing…

The Internet of Things (IoT) is a combination of technology, systems and applications that bridge the gap between the physical and digital worlds. By bridging the gap, businesses can monitor any part of their process by using various methods. This technology provides data collected from places previously unreached, and it is used to help companies make decisions. However, IoT still needs time and careful implementation to develop into a reliable asset. The IoT technology stack is comprised of five main layers that are meant to work together to create a seamless, interconnected system. They build off of one another to…

by Stuart Michie As companies move towards Industry 4.0, artificial intelligence (AI) has become a key differentiator in digital transformation strategies. Businesses are using AI to help make sense of this new data-laden world. The amount of data that is being generated is overwhelming and almost impossible to process manually. AI helps organisations process this information in order to derive value and insights from the data that is being generated. According to Accenture, the emerging technology has an even greater capacity to increase productivity with the potential to boost profitability by 38% by 2035. A significant percentage of the population…

by Jack Barkenbus The electric vehicle revolution is coming, but it won’t be driven by the U.S. Instead, China will be at the forefront. My research on EVs, dating back a decade, convinces me that this global transformation in mobility, from petroleum-fueled vehicles to electric ones, will come sooner than later. The shift is already happening in China, which is the world’s largest automobile market, with 23 million cars sold in 2018. As Western countries approach peak car ownership, there are still hundreds of millions of Chinese families that don’t own a car at all – much less two or…

More than R1 billion was lost to the South African agricultural economy in 2018 thanks to livestock theft. According to a study released by UNISA, there were more than 29, 000 cases reported over the last financial year, with thousands of animals stolen. These thefts weigh heavily on the pockets of farmers and put them under immense pressure to find sustainable solutions that don’t bypass the law but do protect their property and their livelihoods. Into this complex quagmire of loss, livelihood and legal ramification steps agri-tech, the trending term for technology designed specifically for the agricultural sector and its…

by Chase Johnson Data is often called the oil of the 21st century. The more tech companies know about their users, the more effectively they can direct them to goods and services that they are likely to buy. The more companies know about their users, the more competitive they are in the market. Custom-tailored capitalism is what has made Google, Facebook, Amazon and others the richest companies in the world. This profit incentive has turned big tech into a competitive field of mass intelligence gathering. The better and more comprehensive the data, the higher profits will be. But this business…

by Mayank Batavia These days it’s difficult to read about artificial intelligence (AI) without a mention of how China plans to dominate the AI industry worldwide and how it’s going to relegate the U.S. to a distant second position. While it’s not safe to make predictions about whether China will be successful in pushing the U.S. to second position in the AI industry in the coming years, one can easily say China is putting its best chip forward when it comes to AI. China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) came out with a very detailed document in 2017 that…
